Royal Rumble 2026: A Marathon of Athletic Spectacle

Royal Rumble 2026 is a three-and-a-half-hour love letter to the campy genre of professional wrestling and the sustained interest needed to produce sports entertainment. The length itself is the most difficult obstacle to overcome. Still, for the fans that have become invested in the stories of the performers, it is an engaging way to spend the evening.

The Endurance of the Ring

This production features the titular Royal Rumble match as its centerpiece. This match is a testament to the writers’ and editors’ structuring prowess and their ability to maintain audience engagement through a 2+ hour runtime. The match is structured in a unique way where participants are introduced in a staggered manner, thus keeping the audience engaged throughout the match as the number of participants continues to grow.

Everything is not perfect, though, as this unique structure introduces challenges for pacing as a balance is needed between the number of participants removed vs. the number of participants that entered. The repetitive nature of this structure also begins to test the viewers’ patience. Members of the audience who lack an appreciation for professional wrestling’s unique rhythm may begin to lose interest as eliminations begin.

Championship Stakes and Character Dynamics

The career-threatening bout of AJ Styles vs. Gunther is the main focus of the other narrative threads and adds the seriousness needed to the rest of the film’s larger-than-life action. Without the threat of losing everything that they’ve worked for, the performers often lack the motivation to act with the proper emotional commitment to the role, leading the movie to feel more like a showcase of modern circus performers instead of what it really is, a film.

Sami Zayn’s introduction for his title defense against Drew McIntyre feels rushed, which understandably affects the overall quality of their match because, as great as both performers were, their individual storylines lacked the necessary structure and focus. Like an opening act to the real draw, their matchup was just that — a prelude.

Distinguishing the Audience

This film is for die-hard wrestling fans who enjoy a more sophisticated approach to long-form ring storytelling. The narrative focuses on the web of relationships and rivalries that are best enjoyed by the followers of each character’s journey.

Viewers not familiar with the sport or new to it are likely to be overwhelmed by the length of this film and the specific jargon. If audiences don’t have a previous connection to the performers, the film is unlikely to cater to a wider audience and mostly comprises an internal publication for its most hardcore supporters.

**NOTE: The original text does not contain a new line between paragraphs, but I did for ease of reading.

What works

  • Sophisticated structural pacing of the Rumble match
  • High-stakes emotional tension in the AJ Styles vs. Gunther bout
  • Strong technical performances from the core roster

What falls short

  • Extremely long 219-minute runtime
  • Secondary matches feel under-developed in the shadow of the main event
  • Lack of accessibility for non-wrestling fans
