Rana Naidu (2023) is a polarizing crime drama for those who prefer grit over polish
Rana Naidu is a difficult one to classify, but it’s best suited to family members enjoying an exercise in bending the rules in entertainment. While it can be a bit over some audience members who are finicky to darker genres, it has enough depth for dark, character-driven, family-oriented audience members to justify the time involved.
Visual Atmosphere and Auditory Texture
The series’ greatest asset is Jayakrishna Gummadi’s cinematography, which captures the moral ambiguity of its protagonist with a palette of deep shadows and oppressive warm tones. Gummadi’s use of deeper colors is also enhanced by John Stewart Eduri’s score, which adds a scary, slow-paced beat to the series that keeps the slow, boring parts from feeling dull.
Even with a strong production team, the series is also heavily distracted by a reliance on shock value. The series is interrupted by frequent sleazier elements and a nasty pornography scene. The more offensive elements of the series are distracting and disrupt the family drama that has a lot more heart and emotion.
Performance and Narrative Pacing
Rana Daggubati significantly stiffens himself for a reason. He chose to act in that way because his character, like many others, has learned to freeze his emotions in order to solve problems. It is a somewhat one-note acting performance. Many agreed. But some compare his performance to the rest of the cast and say it is so much more restrained and soft than the chaos everyone else brings to the screen. Even when he is forced to face his father’s chaotic return.
The 10-episode format breaks the series by stretching out the narrative too much. This one suffers from pacing issues more than anything. Having said that, there are moments when the narrative finds good pockets of rhythm to show the conflicting emotions of the father-son relationship. However, those sections are halted quickly by unnecessary repetition of the same scenes that don’t give us much insight about the characters and leave us at the same place with even less information. Some times less really is more.
Audience Suitability and Final Verdict
This series is for people that enjoy intense dramas with gray morals, and that can take bad language and deal with grisly details. This show is for folks that appreciate atmosphere and acting. Many of its episodes go long stretches without much happening For some, the dense monotony can be a barrier. For others, the show offers a dark lens that is often missing from other, more straight forward family dramas.
Coordinated, methodical crime dramas will likely appeal more. The show’s attempt at provocative lingers over the burgeoning potential of such an attempt. The show is closest to depicting and analyzing the dysfunction of a family unit, and we may be able to appreciate that more in the future.
Rana Naidu: Ending Explained
(Spoilers ahead) The series ends with Rana’s inability to maintain a clean life when his father is an unpredictable element of chaos. Rana’s trauma is caused by his father, and the series suggests the violent and the unfaithful Naidu family cannot end the cycle by hiring a professional to try to fix it. The series leaves the last image on Rana’s imprisonment by his father’s imprisonment. The last image of the series shows that Rana’s internal loneliness caused him to build a rigid identity defending him against the outside world and all memory of his past.
