The Sandman (2022) is a visually ambitious fantasy that rewards patience
This adaptation of the graphic novel as a moody, atmospheric exploration of mythology will likely lose casual viewers due to loyalty to the source material. But, for those who prefer the slow and dream-like to the fast and furious, it can be an enjoyable film.
A faithful translation of the ethereal
The production design draws on the surreal, shifting nature of the Dreaming to create a texture that breaks from standard superhero shows. Tom Sturridge infuses incredible restraint in his performance of the King of Dreams as an ancient, fragile character as opposed to a godlike being.
Some critics have noted how the CGI doesn’t always meet up with the artistic weight of the original comic panels. Fortunately, the show does have strong staging that makes up for it. The script’s ability to change course to focus on intimate character studies is commendable as it breaks the episodic fantasy’s trend of continuous over-expansive storytelling.
Where the dream occasionally falters
Since the source material contains a lot of world-building and relies on tricky shifts in tone, the series may feel difficult for people to follow unless they are already familiar with it. There are thoughts on how the adaptation captures the source material, but there are questions on if the pacing is off because it is trying to combine large world stakes with more personal inner struggles.
There are different opinions on the show’s deliberate departures from the source material. For some people a departure is a good way to shake up the same old thing. Others may find the lack of the original material’s hand drawn art loses something in the translation to video format.
The show will appeal to people who like character driven fantasy that has good mood setting and world building as its main focus.
